Cindi Courter (Anderer) here.... There is a great deal
written about me on the Internet, if you do a Google search
on me....
But, to fill in the pieces.... After Union College, I moved
to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and lived in Maryland for 8
years. Shaun (Kaiser) was born in April '73 and is now a
doctor at Indiana University Hospitals. He will be finishing
his Internal Medicine residency in December and going on for
Nephrology at IU or Johns Hopkins.
My youngest, Kyle (Courter), is 19-1/2 and a junior at
Butler University in Indy. He is a Theatre major and has
been acting since about 8 y.o.
And, I have 3 step kids and 2 grandkids with Steve. You can
see what we both look like, if you go to
www.deescountryplaces.com. On the left side go to "agents"
and scroll down to see both of us by the Smith River where
we live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
So, I met Steve in 1982 in Baltimore, MD when I was at
Maryland Institute College of Art as a Photography
major/pottery -- minor. Previously, I studied at the
Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. I have
been making art and photographs, since '78.
Finished my BFA and we moved to Virginia Beach. Taught some
photography/art classes, but then pursued my other passion
which is Scuba Diving. A diver since 1980, I went through
Advanced, Dive Con (Assist. Instr./Divemaster), then
Instructor '85, Instructor Trainer (2nd Female Instructor
Worldwide to attain rank through Scuba Schools
International), then onto Master Instructor and Instructor
Evaluator. Was the Director of Training and Education at
Lynnhaven Dive Center teaching all levels off the coast and
taking folks diving all over Florida and Mexico.... (Also,
went with another woman photographer to photograph all over
the Yucatan Peninsula, down to Chiapas and over to Oaxaca to
photograph ruins and Indigenous people/potters of Mexico.
Shaun spent his first two years of med school at Universidad
Autonomo de Guadalajara, so I was able to visit places again
that I hadn't seen in 24 years and bring Kyle, too!)
In 1991, went to work at Duke University (Divers Alert
Network) as their Sponsorship Director, and grew into their
Chief Development Officer, creating their Endowment Fund
which now totals over $1M. While at Duke, received my
Masters degree with concentrations in Latin American
Studies, Women Studies and Non-Profit Management. I was
inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame in 2000 and
served as a trustee on the board from 2004-2007.
So, in 1996, we bought 12 acres of land amongst 300 acres up
in Charity, VA on the Smith River and have created Courter
Moon Lodge and Eco-Cabin and Gallery, with lots of wildlife,
birds, orchard, flowers and vegetables, kayaking, canoeing,
etc. Go to www.courtermoon.com -- we probably need some help
from Missy on the website! :)
We are in the process of building a labyrinth at the bottom
by the river amongst the white pine thicket -- 95 feet
across. I am holding a Women's Retreat the weekend of
September 18-20th, if anyone would like to come????
When I'm not helping Steve with Real Estate hours, talking
to people about the B&B and gardening...I have a non-profit
consulting business and work a great deal with Boards,
proposal writing, strategic planning, and grant writing with
some very interesting people whose missions are working with
healing the earth by improving the soil and the inherent
nature of water. (Spent 4-1/2 years as the grant
writer/coordinator for Patrick County and the School Board
from 2002-2006, before going off on my own.) Also spent a
year as the Executive Director for North Carolina Solar /
Sustainable Energy Association before coming up here from
Durham.
Well, that's a shortened synopsis of the last 40 years...I
also have been an editor and writer for 25+ years and
recently edited a book for Robert Roskind on the Mayan
Prophesy -- 2012. I would love to come see everyone in
August and spend quality time with you. But, it's over 900
miles from here to Boothbay Harbor and two weeks before the
reunion, which I thought I would go up to. As you can tell
by all these activities, we don't take a whole lot of time
off... :( .... So, I guess that's why we have created our
very own paradise/resort :)
I look forward to hearing about all of your adventures and
seeing you soon. And, there is still the possibility that I
can try to get to Maine in August. I should, because the
woman I work with on the water projects (Water Research
Institute) is in Blue Hill, Maine.
Take care....
Hugs,
Cindi
